While teachers across all content areas face challenges planning and teaching effective remote lessons, ELA teachers must navigate a unique set of obstacles: How can we share texts and read online with our students? How do we support student writing from a distance? How can we gather data about student comprehension and effectively respond to gaps in understanding? As we consider the long-term impact of online learning, it is especially urgent to ensure we are supporting the progress of all students in literacy, from elementary through high school.
In this highly interactive 90-minute introductory webinar we will share clips from the online classes of real ELA teachers. We will identify and discuss principles from these examples to help you plan and implement engaging and rigorous online lessons in the ELA classroom.
TOPICS WE WILL DISCUSS:
- Balancing three different Ways of Reading, both synchronously and asynchronously
- Using different forms and formats of writing
- Checking for Understanding in an online ELA class
WHAT TO EXPECT:
This will be an interactive session in which we seek to model many of the techniques we describe for synchronous online learning so participants can experience them from a students’ perspective.
With that in mind we are limiting the group size to 30 participants to maximize engagement and ask that you remain visible on your camera and participate actively in discussions. (If you prefer not to do so, please know that a recording of the webinar will be available on our blog).
As in our regular Train the Trainer workshops, schools will have the option to purchase an Implementation Toolkit License. The school leader will receive a link to download copies of all workshop materials, including:
- PowerPoint deck used in the webinar
- All video clips shown and talking points for each clip
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This webinar is designed for ELA teachers grades 3 and up, and/or coaches, ideally in teams of two or three who will be responsible for demonstrating and leading training on effective ELA teaching for colleagues at their campus. To ensure access to the greatest number of schools, we ask that schools do not take all of the seats for a particular session.
