Dean of Students Virtual Series

We define a Dean of Students as the school leader most in charge of creating a strong, vibrant school culture in which students thrive. Though many schools in fact have a Dean(s) of Students, the role goes by other names as well: it can be the work of an Assistant Principal, a House or Hall Principal, Dean of Culture or even the job of the Principal herself. Whatever the name and structure it takes in a given school, the Dean of Students’ role is vital to student and teacher success. It entails ensuring that all classrooms have a foundation of positive behavior to enable rigorous and engaging academic instruction to thrive. The Dean’s role ensures that everyone participates in a positive culture; even those students who seem to resist it most.

Designed for Summer 2020

As schools prepare for the demands of reestablishing and/or strengthening their schools’ culture in 2020-2021, we are offering a series of remote sessions designed to build the capacity of Deans, Assistant Principals or Behavior Interventionists to lead strong school culture. Each session will be conducted via Zoom and includes pre-work, study of exemplar video, technique notes, practice activities to build capacity and post-session exercises to keep the learning alive. Group sizes will be small—groups of less than 20 educators facilitated by a 3-person TLAC team—so that we can maximize engagement and, of course, practice.

  • A framework for providing effective coaching and feedback to Deans
  • Insights when describing the effective application of techniques by Deans
  • Practice activities that will strengthen Deans’ capacity to apply effective techniques in their schools
  • The opportunity to plan how you will implement these techniques in your school’s professional development program

  • Crucial culture-building moments that Deans own including: Public Deaning, Private Deaning, Data Gathering, Family Communication, and Dean Systems & Routines
  • Effective coaching during practice to help school culture leaders master the techniques

The session dates and times are as follows:

  • Private Deaning: Part 1 – July 22, 2020 from 2:00PM–3:30PM EST
  • Private Deaning: Part 2 – July 24, 2020 from 2:00PM–3:30PM EST

  • Access to sample lessons from our Dean of Students curriculum with a pilot partner agreement
