As legendary basketball coach John Wooden famously put it: “The most important task of teaching is to differentiate ‘I taught it’ from ‘they learned it.’” For many educators who are navigating this “new normal” of remote learning, Wooden’s maxim on the link between effective teaching and Checking for Understanding has never felt more urgent, or more challenging. CFU is especially difficult during synchronous learning because it requires teachers to gather, process, and act on the data stream in real time. Fortunately, with some simple tools and systems, teachers are finding ways to overcome the inherent challenges of CFU online.
In this highly interactive 90-minute webinar, we will share clips of teachers who have found effective and manageable ways to Check for Understanding during synchronous lessons. From these examples, we’ll also distill some guiding principles that can help you or your teaching staff refine your online teaching practices.
This is a 301 webinar for remote instruction. It builds on the foundational principles from our 101 and 201 webinars.
TOPICS WE WILL DISCUSS:
- How to efficiently collect evidence of student learning in real time
- Ways to use “Online Show Call” to address common errors or help students improve their work
- How to build and maintain an online culture where students feel safe revealing, discussing, and learning from their mistakes
WHAT TO EXPECT:
We recommend but do not require that participants take our two introductory webinars (101: Principles of Remote Instruction, and 201: Engaging & Interactive Online Lessons) in advance of this session.
This will be an interactive session in which we model the engagement techniques gleaned from the classrooms we’ve studied so participants can experience them from a students’ perspective. Please plan to be actively engaged.
As in our regular Train the Trainer workshops, schools will have the option to purchase an Implementation Toolkit License. The school leader will receive a link to download copies of all workshop materials, including:
- PowerPoint deck used in the webinar
- All video clips shown
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This webinar is designed for leaders or lead teachers, ideally in teams of two or three who will be responsible for demonstrating and leading training on effective teaching for colleagues at their campus.
- Training Fee: $150 per person
- Optional: $200 per school for the licensed materials
