One of the hallmarks of a great classroom is a culture of excellence, which students embody in everything they do. Whether students are raising hands, passing papers, annotating texts, or participating in a discussion, they know how to do it, and they do it well. This excellence is often built on a foundation of well-taught procedures and systems that, with repetition and consistency, become routines – actions that students do automatically and with little-to-no teacher prompting. With this Plug and Play, you’ll be able to train educators in the techniques champion teachers use to design, install, and maintain these foundational Systems and Routines.
Unlike our other Plug and Plays, this expanded Plug and Play is designed to be delivered over multiple sessions at different points in the year rather than a single session. Use the Design and Install sections in August and September when you’re training teachers to design and roll out their procedures and systems. Use the Transfer Ownership section from October to December to support teachers in turning their procedures and systems into routines. Use the Routine Maintenance section from January onward to help teachers keep their routines tight or reboot them if necessary. As with all of our Plug and Plays, you can customize the content however you’d like to meet your teachers’ specific needs.
Through analysis of champion teachers’ techniques and deep planning and practice, participants will learn how to:
- Design and Install Academic, Behavioral, and Cultural systems via Engineer Efficiency, Rollouts, and Deliberate Practice
- Transfer Ownership of procedures and systems to students via Narrate it Back, Remove Scaffolding, Front Load What to Do, and Earned Autonomy
- Maintain Routines via Do It Again, Reboot, and Self-Check Reminders.
Our goal is to help you save time that you would otherwise spend creating a PD session from scratch and dive deep into the small concrete actions that advance your teachers’ skills from good to great. The Plug and Play provides you with:
✓ A fully customizable PowerPoint presentation with embedded videos of teachers Installing and Maintaining Systems
✓ Facilitator notes for what to say and do for each slide
✓ 17 video clips, with detailed analysis of each clip
✓ Carefully designed practice activities
✓ Feedback Cheat Sheets—prioritized success points for coaching teachers on designing, installing, and maintaining Systems and Routines
✓ Participant Handouts for interactive note taking
✓ Next steps to ensure what is learned in the session carries over to classrooms
