about workshops

How do I register for a workshop? Can I register far in advance to secure a spot?

We now open all of our workshops for registration at the start of the school year. Clicking on the “Attend” button on the specific workshop page will bring you to the Eventbrite page to register yourself and colleagues.

Do I have to purchase the license if I attend a workshop?

No. We do occasionally have schools or organizations that attend a workshop and do not purchase the materials license. However, our workshops are a Train-the-Trainer model. We believe it would be very difficult to return to one’s school and train others in the techniques without the videos, practice activities and other support materials provided with the licensing fee.

What materials does purchasing the license provide me above what I receive from attending the workshop?

By purchasing the license (one per school), workshop attendees receive access to a folder on Box that contains all the video clips discussed at the workshop, a full description of all techniques, methods, and practice activities, and additional clips and practice activities on the workshop’s focal techniques. In addition, the Box folder includes a PDF copy of the PowerPoint deck presented in the workshop to use as a model for building one’s own training, a complete copy of the booklet used by participants during the workshop, and additional planning tools and guidance for conducting professional development workshops. With the exception of the Power Point, the documents in the folder are fully editable so that workshop attendees can revise them to meet their school’s particular training needs. All of our workshops are a Train-the-Trainer model. We believe that having the video clips and carefully crafted, ready-to-use practice activities are essential for workshop attendees to be able to return to their schools and teach the techniques to others.

If a workshop I’d like to attend is sold out, how can I be added to the waiting list?

While we would love to include all interested attendees in our workshops, we have limited capacity. When you submit your registration on Eventbrite, the site will notify you if registration is full and give you the option to add your name to the wait list. We encourage you to submit your registration to a workshop even if it’s sold out. We will notify you if a spot becomes available.

Besides the workshop, do you offer any other training resources?

We have several! Our Plug and Plays provide school leaders all the needed resources to deliver 2–3 hour trainings for teachers on specific Teach Like a Champion techniques. Learn more about them in the Plug and Play section of our website. TLAC Online provides 15 minute online modules that allow teachers to learn TLAC techniques, record their practice on their own, and share the practice with a colleague or coach for feedback. We also offer free resources on the blog and under “Free Resources” in the Development section of the website.

How can I purchase video clips or other supporting materials if I have not attended a workshop?

We believe that our videos and materials can drive significant improvement for students, teachers, and leaders in concert with our workshops. Therefore, our videos and support materials are only available for purchase for the attendees of each associated workshop.

The Teach Like a Champion books do include a suite of videos to illustrate the techniques. In addition, our Plug and Plays provide ready-to-use training modules on specific aspects of Teach Like a Champion techniques. Our 100 level Plug and Plays are available to all for purchase. The Plug and Plays provide all needed materials for 2–3 hour training sessions including video clips that we do not feature in our workshops. For more information about Plug and Plays, visit the Plug and Play section of our website.

If I attend a workshop, is my school eligible for the renewal license price for a different workshop license?

Each workshop is accompanied by a unique set of materials that attendees can take home to implement skills learned with their schools. The first time that any school sends attendees to a given workshop, the school will pay a $1,000 (for a 2-day workshop) or $500 (for a 1-day workshop) license fee for school staff to use the materials that accompany the given workshop. We frequently update the materials and videos that we provide to attendees; in fact, every time we host a given workshop, the materials will differ. If a given school sends attendees to the same workshop multiple times, then the school can either opt to:

i.     Pay a $300 (for a 2-day workshop) or $150 (for a 1-day workshop) license upgrade fee after the first workshop to receive updated materials, or

ii.     Continue using older materials at no additional cost.

Please note that the upgrade fee exists only within the same type of workshop (e.g. Engaging Academics or Behavior & Culture); when a given school sends attendees to multiple different workshops, the school must pay the full $1,000 (for a 2-day workshop) or $500 (for a 1-day workshop) license fee for the materials for each type of workshop.

Do you offer bulk workshop registration and/or licensing for large networks and districts?

We do! Contact us at tlac@teachlikeachampion.org. We offer discounts for bulk workshop registration and licensing of multiple schools.

What is the difference between the materials that I license from attending a Teach Like a Champion  workshop and the materials that I could purchase in a Plug and Play?

When attending a workshop, participants receive a comprehensive collection of techniques, videos, the full PowerPoint presentation used in the workshop, practice activities and corresponding coaching guides. The resources allow school leaders to design and lead a sequence of PD sessions that may unfold over several months or a school year. Our Plug and Plays provide a deep dive into aspects of a single technique. Plug and Plays provide leaders with a ready-to-deliver two to three hour training session, including a script for what to say and do, embedded videos, practice activities and a coaching guide. Some Plug and Plays present topics that are not part of workshops or go into greater depth than we typically have time to present.

How do I pay for workshops and licenses?

As part of the registration process on EventBrite, a $200 deposit via credit card or check is required. We will send an invoice to your school for all the remaining registration and licensing fees.

Do you serve food at your workshops?

Breakfast and lunch are included in the price for all workshops.

I’ve got other questions about workshop and training that aren’t answered here. What should I do?

We want to help you! If you’ve got any questions we haven’t answered here, please contact us at tlac@teachlikeachampion.org.

about requesting doug or erica to speak

I’d like Doug or a member of the team to speak to our organization. Is that possible? How do I get in touch with them?

Excellent question. As you can imagine, Doug in particular receives a lot of speaking requests. Since the bulk of our time is devoted to developing and facilitating training on Teach Like a Champion resources, Doug and the team’s time is limited. However, we are occasionally able to accommodate speaking requests. To submit a request, please email tlac@teachlikeachampion.org.

Do Doug and the team ever present outside of the United States?

Yes. We have done presentations in England, Holland, Jordan, Lebanon, Chile, and New Zealand. To submit a request for an international speaking engagement, please email tlac@teachlikeachampion.org.
